Happy Halloween from Sheriff Woody and a football player!! Unfortunately, the boys have been sick this week so we've missed out on a lot of Halloween fun. They missed a field trip to the pumpkin patch on Tues, the Fall Festival at church last night and their class Halloween parties at school today. Luke has had a cold and Will has had asthma trouble. But they did feel well enough tonight to trick-or-treat. Though we were only out for about 15 minutes or so. They loved passing out candy to the trick-or-treaters that came to our door. Neither was scared by some of the gory costumes on some of these kids. And, of course, they've loved the candy. We don't have too much though, since they didn't do very many houses and we passed all of ours out.
Neither of the boys enjoys wearing costumes. In August Will kept saying he wanted to be "the Spider-Man" so he could "kick tarantula spiders." He doesn't know the Spider-Man stories so I think he was under the impression it had something to do with pest control. I got him a book about Spider-Man and once he figured out that Spider-Man's job is to "catch bad guys" he didn't want to be Spider-Man any more. Then he wanted to be a "tire change guy" which, as best we can tell, meant a racing pit crew worker. But that didn't last very long. Then he wanted to be a football player. Then, a week before Halloween, he said he wanted to be a scuba diver (we had seen a scuba diver cleaning tanks in Disney World). I waited a few days and he was sure about being a scuba diver. So we bought a bunch of stuff to make him a scuba diver costume and Luke was going to be a shark. I began on Will's costume on Sunday and asked him to try it on about an hour into it. Then he decided that he wanted to be a football player again. Long story short- I'm returning the scuba diver and shark costume materials. Will wore his Tony Romo jersey and was happy with being a football player. Luke wore his Woody jammies and we bought him a hat at Wal-mart. Total Halloween costume costs: $3.97. It's a good thing I didn't put all of that effort into costumes because they didn't have as many opportunities to wear them since they were under the weather this week.
Luke wasn't sure about Halloween but seems to have had a good time. Will remembered that he gets candy so he was on board with it. I was impressed that he wasn't worried or frightened about some of the darker images you see this time of year. I'd frequently hear him say to himself or tell Luke that "witches aren't real" and "ghosts aren't real," very matter-of-factly. Occasionally he'll say "bad guys aren't real" and we have no intention of correcting him on that one any time soon. Before our Disney trip he was concerned about seeing Zurg, the "bad guy" in Toy Story. I explained to him that stories often have heroes and villains, but villains in stories aren't real. Now when he sees "bad guys" in stories or shows he'll call them villains or "Dark Vaders." He's never seen Star Wars but he knows Darth Vader and thinks all bad guys are "Dark Vaders." Also men with black motorcycle helmets are "Dark Vader." It's cute.
