Will on the Move

We're back from Indiana and back in our routine. The little guy is just a few days shy of 9 months old and he is doing well! He was pretty good on the flights- only fussed during the last 15 minutes or so coming into St. Louis. Other than that, we didn't hear much out of him. He slept through two of the four flights. All things considered, he's a good little traveler. It took some time for him to warm up to the crowd, but by the end of our trip he was having a good time. His baptism went very well- he didn't fuss even though he'd missed a nap. He did crash for the first half of his party afterwards though.

During the last couple of weeks, Will has had an explosion of new skills. He is now talking a lot more. He makes numerous consonant sounds (not just "ga") and I've even heard a few vowel sounds. Most importantly, he now says "da da" all the time. I don't think he connects "da da" with David quite yet, but he will soon. He spends the day (and sometimes night) talking up a storm. He also seems to understand us a lot more, which is fun. I've got a little talking buddy! He likes to play a game where he makes sounds and we repeat them. He'll also mimic physical movements like waving or shaking your head. He thinks both of these games are hilarious. His sense of humor has definitely evovled- sometimes he'll just laugh and laugh for no apparent reason. As long as he's not tired or hungry it's never too hard to get him to giggle.

Will has also made some great strides physically- when motivated, he can sit up from lying on his back. He has also mastered the army-crawl. It's amazing how fast he is getting- especially when he eyes a laptop on the ground. Everyday he gets faster and he's able to explore whatever strikes his fancy- today it was doorstops. His penchant for danger is still as strong as ever- he likes to seek out cords and he's figured out how to pull off these small, white plastic pieces that are on the ends of the doorstops. He keeps me on my toes! Will is definitely mobile now and he doesn't just depend on rolling anymore. I'd bet he's just as fast as traditional crawlers when he does his squirmy army-crawl. In light of these new developments we've already had to lower the mattress in his crib- he's starting to try to pull himself up on things and we don't want him to try to jump out!

His fine motor skills have recently improved as well. He is getting very good at picking up his rice puffs between his thumb and index finger (the pincher grasp). And last night- after weeks of practicing with Daddy- Will finally picked up his little basketball with one hand and put it through his little basketball hoop! He did it several times before he got upset at how loud we were cheering on his shooting hoops! He did it again several times today. Maybe we have a little basketball star! We've also been working on putting his little plastic shapes through his shape sorter. He usually just takes the lid off and eats it, but today he started trying to fit the shapes through the slots. He only got one through, but it's progress!

He's been sleeping well at night and during the day but we are still up twice a night to eat- surprise, surprise. I guess it takes a lot of energy to learn all of these new things. In other exciting food news- we've entered the wonderful world of dairy! We introduced yogurt this week, mixed with fruit. Generally, babies aren't supposed to have cow's milk until 1 year old, but there is something different about yogurt and cheese that makes them ok. He seems to like the yogurt- it's probably a nice change of pace for him. After we get through our yogurt introduction we will be trying cantaloupe and plums (separately).

This weekend will be a great one for the little guy- he is pumped about his first Super Bowl. No chips and salsa for him but maybe we'll whip him up a little treat (pears maybe?). Will is also going to have a new cousin in a couple of days- Xander- which he is very excited about!! All is well in the land of Will!
